Ion ideas
Collecting good new ideas in trapped-ion quantum computing as I stumble upon them. Do send me anything I missed!
2022
- Ions can be moved in 2D just as well as in 1D
- Raman gates can be good if you do your numbers carefully
2023
- Laser ablation can be done from behind
- Good ion loading is not about trap depth, it’s about trap volume
- Traps with SNSPDs may be quite practical after all
- It is not that hard to wire up 1000 qubits (shameless plug)
- Penning traps might actually make quantum computers
- Ion traps can be 3D printed
- Long ion chains get one more shot, thanks to optical tweezers
- Light-induced stray fields can be modelled (sometimes)
2024
- Quantum spring arrays
- On-chip light collection is not so easy, continued
- All those weird lineshapes can be modelled
- Great laser-free gates do not require field nulling (shameless plug)
- Motional state measurements need not suck
- Mixed-species cooling need not suck
- WISE sorting really works
- Motional decoherence can be well quantified
- 300 ions in one pancake? That’s fine
- Complicated ions can be EIT-cooled, continued
- Complicated ions can be reset with ease (shameless plug)
- Surface probing with ions for real
- Fast and efficient sub-Doppler cooling
- Maybe cavities can be integrated with ion traps after all
